When students begin preparing for the ACT, one of the first questions they ask is, "Which book should I use?" With so many test-prep companies offering study guides, practice books, and online courses, it can be difficult to know where to start.
One resource consistently stands out: the Official ACT Subject Guides 2026–2027 Complete Set. Published by the makers of the ACT, these books provide students with something no third-party resource can fully replicate—the opportunity to practice with authentic ACT questions.

The Drawback
The ACT makers are stingy. They released a brand-new test format, but they didn't release too many practice tests. The overall Official ACT Guide includes many of the same tests as last year's guide, which was disappointing. Furthermore, the cover of the book announces that there are four tests in the book and four tests online. Spoiler alert: they're the same 4 tests. Additionally, the individual subject guides include the same tests as the overall book. They're the same ones you can get on the ACT site as well.
Obviously, I'm disappointed with the lack of distinct practice tests, but as long as you aren't replacing the 2nd edition with the 3rd, you won't notice how similar they are. They're designed for student use, and students don't tend to buy more than one version of a test-prep book. For tutors, it's frustrating, but the books are still the best ACT subject guides for several reasons:
For use with students in tutoring sessions: if both student and tutor purchase the books, it's easy to work together online or in person.
For helping tutors to learn the test "from the horse's mouth." I create my own materials, and I rely on these guides to help me decide how my questions should be structured and what content to include and omit.
For students who are preparing for the test without the benefit of a tutor. These are the books I'm recommending to my students who want to continue ACT prep work while they travel during the summer or as a supplement to ACT small-group classes.
The subject guides' practice tests make up small portions of these books. The descriptions of question types and how to approach the test are easy to understand, concise, and helpful, and there are plenty of ACT practice questions in the chapters, which are separate from the practice tests.
